Earth Day 2016

BY Sue Williamson

April 22nd is Earth Day, an opportunity for us all to get involved in making a difference to how we treat our planet.

During the 46th year of the event, the theme is Trees for the Earth; a project via which the Earth Day organisers intend planting 7.8 billion trees by their 50th anniversary.

Why trees?

  • Trees help to combat climate change by absorbing excess CO2 from the environment
  • Trees take in odours and harmful gases in the air, enabling us all to breathe fresher air
  • Many communities can benefit from employment, sustainability, self-sufficiency and income generated from trees of various types

How do I get involved?

Have a look on the Earth Day 2016 website for any events taking place locally to you.

If there’s nothing suitable, you can, of course, organise an event of your own. You may not have time to arrange it by 22nd April, but all environmental work is appreciated, no matter when it occurs.

Here are some great ideas of how you can take action to help achieve the 3 Billion Acts of Green objective.

There’s even a handy online toolkit to help you on your way.
