Pop-Up London Restaurants – April 2013

We love the pop-up craze which has taken London by storm over the past year or so; new restaurants, bars and shops to try, in some very interesting locations. We love it even more now that some pop-ups are managing to transition into permanency. If you are after a taste of something new this month, make your way to north London (the North Londoners amongst us are very happy about these locations!) one of these fantastic pop-up restaurants. Remember, they’re here for a limited time only.

David Ahern at House of Wolf

Islington’s House of Wolf is far more than just your average eatery. The décor is quirky, the events diary is full and the chef is appointed on a pop-up residency basis. David Ahern is the chef in situ until 27th April and the reservations book is filling up fast. Experienced pop-up chef David has previously worked at The Ship, The Engineer and the pop-up Burger Breakout, which saw its lifespan increase from one day to six months due to popularity. David’s menu at House of Wolf includes a salmon, lettuce, bacon and tomato starter, a quail’s nest main created using a quail’s egg, quail leg meat and mixed berries, 12 hour braised beef cheek and poptarts and toffee apple lollipops to finish. Advance booking is essential.

Pip’s Dish

Former BBC producer Philip Dundas is cooking up a storm in an old Citroen garage in Islington.  This particular pop-up will be open until 28th April, serving Thursday fish suppers, Friday and Saturday dinners and Sunday lunch to a steady stream of diners. All meals at Pip’s Dish cost £30 per head for three courses, bring your own bottle. Once the current residency ends, Pip will be keeping the Garage on for a new venture in May, including a week in collaboration with We Are Pop Up, where five chefs will be given the opportunity to cook for a night each and a Pips Dish Cookery School. To book a table before the ovens are turned off at the end of the month, contact the restaurant by telephone only.

The Picnic Pop-Up Kitchen

Considering the dismal weather we’ve been experiencing, bringing the British garden picnic indoors sounds like a very sensible idea. Every Saturday and Sunday from 6th April, brunch, dinner and supper menus will be on offer at The Hideaway Bar, Archway.  For brunch, diners can choose from sweet and savoury pancakes, Full English, granola and cordials; dinner features “British tapas” such as pork belly crackling, slow-cooked Oxtail stew, venison and parsnip kebabs and deep-fried Cornish squid; whereas Sunday supper guests will have homemade meat or veggie burgers, chorizo Scotch egg, roasted vegetable tart and pan-fried mackerel fillet in store. Advance booking is recommended.

Charlie Stocker’s Fine Dining Pop-Up

On 30th April, Masterchef finalist Charlie Stocker will be hosting a one-day-only fine dining pop-up at The Old Sessions House in Clerkenwell.  The menu, priced at £55 per head, includes Amuse Bouche, crisp pheasant egg with wild garlic panna cotta, handmade tagliatelle with foraged mushrooms, spring lamb and lemon crème brulee. Reservations are essential.  If you can’t make it to this particular event, Charlie hosts regular pop-ups; details of which are available on his website.
