10,000 Emails Per Year – A Valuable Use of Your Time?
According to research carried out by Warwick Business School in 2013, the average British office worker sends and receives approximately 10,000 emails per year. (we always knew we weren’t average, it’s at least double that in this office!). That breaks down to between 40 and 100 every single day; just imagine how much time that takes up. It doesn’t just eat into work time either – a huge number of people now log into their work emails outside business hours, meaning the popular electronic tool is eating into personal lives and seriously affecting work life balance.
While the sheer number of emails sent may not be a huge surprise in itself, the fact that the introduction of new technology has only increased productivity by 2% per year since the 1970s definitely is. Computers and mobile telephony were predicted to significantly increase productivity, as they would enable quick, easy communication but for many this does not appear to be true.
If anything, the ability to work from anywhere has just encouraged people to work longer hours and never really switch off completely.
Some other interesting facts which arose from the research include:
- Over 10% of people spend their entire day using a computer
- 58% of office workers believe technology has made them more productive
- 57% log in to work email outside normal working hours
- 85% of those who access email remotely believe it improves their productivity
- 1 in 12 UK office workers receives more than 100 emails per day
- 20% never use a pen and paper anymore
- 25% don’t remember life before the advent of email
