Top 10: Summer reading

1. Fallen – Karin Slaughter. The latest offering from Slaughter was released this month. Fallen tells the story of Special Agent Faith Mitchell and the brutal murder that happens in her home and the search to find her mother that follows. The award winning American novelist combines personal tragedy and crime in her latest novel to give her reader’s one of her best efforts yet.

2. Mini Shopaholic – Sophie Kinsella. The next installment in the ‘Shopahaolic’ series sees Becky Brandon trying to cope with the pressures of motherhood and run a personal shopping business in the current economic climate. Definitely one for the chick-lit lovers amongst you and for those that have followed the series. Due for release on the 21st July 2011.

3. The Fates Will Find A Way – Hannah Pittard. A story of a young girl who goes missing and the gossip that she leaves behind. This debut from Pittard has echoes of the Virgin Suicides with the teenage boys left behind glamourising the life of the missing Nora Lindell and fantasising about what could have happened.

4. Bossy Pants – Tina Fey. One of America’s most famous and talented female comediennes regails us with tales of her hilarious and slightly bemusing life thus far. These memoirs will provide you with various laugh out loud moments so may not be ideal for the morning commute on the tube!

5. What you see is what you get – Alan Sugar. If business is more your thing, Alan Sugar’s autobiography should provide you with some tips and inspiration on starting your own company. Telling his story from his early days growing up on a council estate in Hackney until now, this book tracks the story of Lord Sugar’s success, and even some failures. If you’re a fan of The Apprentice, no doubt you’ll love this.

6. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – JK Rowling. Admittedly this isn’t a new release but with the final installment in the Harry Potter series released in cinemas this summer, it might be an idea to remind yourself of what Harry, Hermione and Ron got up to in their final year at Hogwarts. The movie was released on July 15th so try and get this read asap.

7. My Booky Wook 2 – Russell Brand. After the success of ‘My Booky Wook’ Brand has a lot to live up to with his follow-up. This book charts Russell’s meteoric rise to fame, told with the wit and sarcasm you would expect from him. This book may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it is guaranteed to make you laugh.

8. How to be a Woman – Caitlin Moran. Definitely one for the strong minded females out there (naturally we have a copy in the office!). A book about what it is really like to be a woman in the 21st century and the agony and the ecstasy that it can bring by The Times columnist Caitlin Moran. From the physical pain of bikini waxing to the emotional pain of having an abortion, Moran tells it exactly as it is.

9. The Radleys – Matt Haig. Recommended by the TV Bookclub, this is Twilight for grown ups and without the sappy love story. A story about a dysfunctional family in Yorkshire that, despite their vampire tendancies, are easy for everyone to relate to. The book is set to feature on the show in August if you want to get the view of the experts.

10. The Four Hour Work Week – Tim Ferris. Another business book for you to get stuck into. If Lord Sugar inspired you to start your own company, Tim Ferris will teach you how to manage your time and how to make a lot of money without working 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Particularly in the current economic climate, this is an essential read for anyone with their own business. A must read.
