Tech Detox 2012
How about starting the year with some healthy tech habits.
Here are Digital Dragonfly’s top tips for a more productive experience with your computer in 2012.
1. Clean, clean, clean
When is the last time you cleaned your computer- as in screen and keyboard? Get rid of dust and germs by stocking up on screen wipes and carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to clean a keyboard, such as these from Apple.
2. Clear your Desktop.
Saving documents on the desktop is a big no-no. Delete anything you don’t need anymore and move what you want to keep into appropriate folders. If you have loads of shortcuts consider deleting these as well. More likely than not they were saved there automatically when you downloaded new software and you may not even be using them.
3. Run Software updates.
Whether you have a Mac or PC your machine will work best when its software is up to date. Make sure you regularly check for any updates and let these install.
4. Sort out your inbox.
Try to get your inbox to zero everyday by having an ‘action’ folder and a ‘reading’ folder to help you get through your emails. Unsubscribe to anything you aren’t reading to reduce the number of unnecessary emails distracting you from what really needs to be done. Organise your emails with folders so you can easily find what you need at a later date.
5 Empty the bin
It’s surprising how many people forget to regularly empty their trash and downloads folders. Empty both on a regular basis.
6. Backup your data
Computers can fail, get stolen and lost. Avoid expensive data recovery costs and invest in a removable hard-drive and cloud backup solution to keep your data off site.
