Great ways to avoid the football!
Euro 2012 is now well under way, much to the despair of those of us who don’t want to spend the next few weeks immersed in back-to-back football matches. Luckily, it’s fairly easy to escape for the day and avoid the sport altogether. No matter where in the UK you are, there is something fun you could be doing right now.
Legoland Windsor – Although it is mainly considered a family destination, Legoland Windsor is a great day out whether or not you’re bringing small people with you. If the fact that many areas of the park are constructed from over 55 million Lego bricks isn’t enough to entice you, the theme park is home to several excellent rides and a brand new Lego Star Wars attraction. We defy you not to be amazed by the buildings and scenery recreated in Miniland!
Go Ape – Definitely one for the braver football-avoider, Go Ape have a range of fantastic forest adventures available throughout the UK. Most of the adventure comes from swinging from the trees, climbing, balancing and flying down zip-wires, but the popularity of Go Ape’s 27 courses has led them to expand into even more fun activities. Some locations now have forest Segways and bike rides available too. While a tree-top adventure is something you will either love or hate, it’s guaranteed to be an experience you won’t forget!
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew – If a relaxing day is more your style, you need look no further than the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. As well as a wide range of beautiful plants and flowers, Kew has a tree top walkway, restored Victorian kitchens, an ice house and an evolution house for visitors to explore. Cake and coffee are a must for any day out and can be purchased, alongside more substantial meals, at one of the four on-site cafes and restaurants.
Eltham Palace & Gardens – Those who dream of experiencing a medieval jousting tournament should take themselves to Eltham Palace & Gardens on 23rd and 24th June. Four knights will be charging on horseback in an effort to win the title, while jesters amuse the crowd. Falconry displays, dancing and more will also take place over the course of the weekend. Even if you can’t visit on that particular weekend, Eltham Palace & Gardens provides a stunning Art Deco surrounding in the heart of South London
Camera Obscura – Situated next to the imposing Edinburgh Castle, Camera Obscura offers a unique view of the Scottish capital city. Start your tour with a guided view of the Camera Obscura itself, which lets you view Edinburgh in real time, pick up and move cars and people. It’s hard to believe that it was built a long time before modern technology! Once that is done, move onto the four floors of optical illusions, light tricks and other amazing attractions
