How to get more life out of your phone’s battery
Smartphones such as the iPhone and various Android handsets have become an integral part of daily life. It’s impossible to walk down the street without spotting handfuls of people using these tiny computers; whether they are checking Facebook, sending an email, taking a photo or just indulging in some old-fashioned chat, people are rarely seen without a phone in their hand anymore.
While we would all agree that smartphones are fantastic pieces of technology – who would have thought even five years ago that we would be able to do so much with a mobile phone – they have got some annoying traits. The biggest annoyance for most smartphone users is the speed at which the battery power runs out. Of course, it is understandable why it happens; all of those features to run and only a small battery to do it with means it can’t last for days like old-skool Nokias used to. We’re not promising that we can make your iPhone, Android or Blackberry battery last for days but we can give you a few tips on how to make it last longer.
Kill the apps
Having a plethora of apps at your fingertips is amazing; we will never get bored of being able to check the weather, book a train ticket and even do our weekly groceries from our mobile phone as we wait for the bus. However, all of these apps are draining your battery even when they appear to be closed. Preventing these apps from running constantly can do wonders for the longevity of the battery. Aside from stopping them in the settings of your device, apps such as Juice Defender and Battery Saver can be invaluable for this purpose as they allow you to choose what you want to let run and when.
Sync, push notifications and location services
These functions all work behind the scenes keeping your emails and social networking updated. Location services can be turned off straight away – do you really need everyone to know where you are every second of the day? While you are fiddling with the settings on your device, turn off the push notifications too. It won’t do you any harm to manually check Facebook, Twitter and email when you want to see what’s new. Finally, set your phone to sync less regularly than it currently does – pulling in email every five minutes is unnecessary and is a huge drain on your phone’s power.
Turn off the internet
Having the ability to connect to the internet constantly doesn’t mean that you have to do it. Wi-Fi and 3G connections are hard on your battery life so turn them both off and only connect when you need to. The apps we mentioned before can also be set up to manage your internet connection, so you can choose to kill it when you lock the phone and to keep it turned off overnight for example.
While these three factors are the main culprits in sucking the life out of your smartphone, there are also a few small changes you can make which will make a considerable difference. Locking your phone as soon as you stop using it, turning down the level of brightness and letting your battery run out completely every now and again can also go a long way.
