October Plenty

BY cushion the impact

Those living in London have had plenty of excellent entertainment at their fingertips this year, as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympic Games and the Paralympics were added to the already hectic social calendar of the city. Autumn doesn’t need to mean an end to outdoor entertainment, in fact, it is quite the opposite as harvest festivals and Christmas markets are now just around the corner.

One such harvest festival, October Plenty, will be taking over Southwark on Sunday 21st October. Londoners seeking ancient customs, traditional theatre, delicious food and plenty of festive cheer should make sure to be outside Shakespeare’s Globe at 12 noon on the day, ready to see all those wishes come true.  Beginning at this spot on Bankside, the celebration is a fantastic reminder that the best things in life can indeed be free.

The aim of October Plenty is to create a celebration of the seasons, weather and food, which takes place in public and is available to everyone. The festival itself needs to be experienced first-hand but here are just a few of the planned highlights.

The Corn Queene  –  this giant effigy laden with the October Plenty;  wheat, barley, apples, root vegetables and foliage, will form part of a procession around the front of the Globe, which will be led by the Berry Man and accompanied by the Hobby Horse.

The Berry Man – this leader of the procession carries an apple tree to its new home on the Bankside, leading the procession.

The Procession – once the crowd has gathered outside the Globe, they are led to Borough Market to join in with the Apple Day celebrations. The Corn Queene, the Berry Man, his apple tree and plenty of songs and music will build a party atmosphere en route, before leading their followers to fun. Conker fights, soul biscuits, cider, apple bobbing and beer will be plentiful.

The Play – this year’s October Plenty play will be “The Lovers’ Dreame”.

The Story Orchard – party-going children can decorate the trees with their wishes and listen to plenty of harvest stories.

If you plan to take part in this year’s October Plenty, make sure to be by the Globe at noon on October 21st. As previously mentioned the event is free of charge and will go ahead whatever the weather.  Wrap up warmly and make the most of a beautiful autumnal day!
