Applying simple Feng Shui techniques to your home office will help you work smarter and be more productive.

Feng Shui, meaning Wind and Water, is the ancient Chinese art of working with the natural forces that flow around our world.  Paying attention to this energy in your home office will have a beneficial impact on how effectively you work.

Let’s start with the basics.  The position of your desk in the room is crucial.  Always sit with a solid wall behind you.  Sitting with your back to the door, the window, or open to the room, does not provide enough support.  In Feng Shui we call this the ‘Mountain’ so you want it to be solid and strong to give you a feeling of security.

Have your desk positioned furthest from the door but within direct sight of the door.  This is the ‘Command Position’ and gives you control over the space.  Sitting too close to the door, or in line with the door, places you in the path of strong flowing energy that will make you feel unsettled when you work.

Your office chair is important.  Just as a solid wall provides the ‘Mountain’, you need a good high back to your office chair to support your energy. For the same reason, the chair should have strong arms either side.  Balancing on a wobbly chair or sitting on a stool will not provide you with security or a solid foundation.

Don’t sit facing the wall.  In Feng Shui what is in front of you represents your future.  So if you feel blocked or limited in your career or any other aspect of your life, and you sit facing the wall, it’s time to move your desk.

And whilst we’re on the subject of blocks, clutter has a huge effect on how energy flows.  Clutter on desks, on the floor, in drawers, on shelves, or even on your computer, wherever it accumulates it creates stagnation.  Have a good clear out, be ruthless, throw it out and put away the things you keep and don’t use every day. Notice afterwards how much lighter you feel when you work.

Pay attention to your office door.  Make sure it opens fully and without restriction.  In Feng Shui your door represents opportunity.  If the door can’t open completely because there is a bookcase or cabinet in the way, you are energetically limiting the opportunities for your business.

So put on your ‘Feng Shui glasses’ and take a fresh look at your home office today.

Remember, these are tips and are not a substitute for an authentic and professional Feng Shui consultation. However, putting these recommendations into place really will help improve the flow of energy in your home office and your business.
