World Meteorological Day 2013 – A Quintessentially British Event?
“This winter will never end” is a statement which we have, quite dramatically, made more than once over the past month or so. However, as it does every year, it finally ended on March 21st with the arrival of the Spring Equinox. We all know that this won’t be the end of our weather-related woes; the British weather is likely to take some time to catch up with the calendar! Considering that we spend so much time bemoaning the weather, we thought it was quite apt to mention that World Meteorological Day falls on 23rd March.
The World Meteorological Organisation has arranged the celebration each year since the WMO Convention came into being on 23rd March 1950. Each year, the 191 member nations celebrate World Meteorological Day by organising their own events, which fit in with a specified theme. Previous themes have included Powering Our Future With Weather, Climate and Water, Climate For You and Preventing and Mitigating Natural Disasters. The theme for 2013 is Watching the Weather to Protect Life and Property.
If you are interested in learning more about the World Meteorological Organization and World Meteorological Day, a brochure containing the details of the event can be downloaded from the WMO website. Otherwise, you can celebrate like the rest of us by remaining astonished that it snows in March and providing regular weather updates via Facebook and Twitter!
