Top 10 Spring Gardening Tips

Patrick Wagstaff of www.theplotdoctor.co.uk gives cushion the impact’s blog readers the benefit of his expertise in getting ready for the new season.

After the cold winter we have had, many  plants have been damaged by frost. Cut off the scorched leaves and trim back branches to the first green bud.

Clear out any remaining bedding plants that might have been left in pots and tubs and have died, this year many plants such as geraniums will have been killed outright.

Now that the days are getting longer  try to get out and clear up any remaining dead leaves from lawns and beds, use them as compost.

Wash off terraces and decking areas to reduce the green algae which will have spread over the winter. Either hire a pressure washer,  use some form of bleach or else scrub hard with a brush.

Lawns will be starting to look shaggy as grass starts to grow, give the lawns their first cut with the blades set high.

Rake through the lawns to clear out moss and apply a lawn weed and moss killer. Apply a lawn fertiliser.

If you have a compost heap now is the time to spread the compost out on the garden before plants start to grow. Turn over the remainder to ensure it rots down evenly.

If you have a vegetable plot, clear out any weeds  and turn the soil over ready for planting.

If you want to sow  your vegetables earlier, consider investing in cloches to warm the soil.

Clear out all those old pots and other items of rubbish from the hidden corners of the garden, they’ll only act as a home for slugs and snails. Recycle where possible.
