Optimising Your Morning Routine – Part 2

Earlier this week, we shared five of our top tips for a stress-free morning. We hope that you have had a chance to try them out because now it’s time for the next five. Ten easy steps to a more relaxed morning you, what more could you want?

Shower quickly

A shower is an essential but it can be done a lot more efficiently than most of us actually do. If you can, try showering the night before to save time in the morning. Otherwise, you could use a timer to teach yourself to take shorter showers or wear a shower cap on days when you don’t really need to wash your hair. Most of us don’t need to wash our hair every day and, when you combine the time taken to wash it with the time taken to dry, straighten, curl or style it, it equates to quite a lot of time better used elsewhere.

Streamline your beauty routine

While we completely understand not being willing to leave the house bare-faced, there are ways to reduce the time taken to look fantastic in the morning. Most of your cosmetics can be saved for nights out and special occasions; keep your basics together but separated from the rest so you are not tempted to spend precious time on a leisurely application after your shower.

Use a timer

If you regularly rush out the door in the morning despite getting up in plenty of time, chances are you spend more time on each task than you think. Try using a timer to find out how long you really spend getting washed, dressed, fed and out of the door. The timer will also remove the temptation to be distracted by checking Facebook or watching breakfast television!

Plan a quick breakfast

While a leisurely breakfast can be very enjoyable, keep it as a weekend treat. For weekdays, stock up on quick, easy breakfasts such as hard-boiled eggs, fruit, cereal bars and nuts. Homemade smoothies are also a great, healthy breakfast option. Whizz it all in the blender the night before and grab it on your way out in the morning.

Don’t get distracted

We mentioned it briefly in the timer section, but it is very easy to get distracted from your morning routine. Make it a rule not to turn the television or radio on before work (Andrea is having withdrawal symptoms just thinking about not listening to the Today programme, how will she cope without John, Evan and Sarah). Don’t check your phone or messages until you are on the train. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: email and social media can be great, but they are also the creators of many time management problems!
