Right on target
New Years Resolutions… did you keep yours?
Have I lost weight? Pardon?
Have I taken up more exercise? Did you say something? Sorry, I can’t hear a thing.
Did I try something new? Tick!
One out of three isn’t bad surely? Late in December a friend and I decided we wanted to do something different this year. Archery was the first one we should try. Petanque, croquet, golf (indoors and with no check trousers) and curling are also on the agenda. I’ll let you know about the progress of those.
Archery is the art, practice, or skill of propelling arrows with the use of a bow, in case you didn’t know and longbows are passé apparently so no Robin Hood moments for us.
Archery is fun!
We were given a high tech version of a bow, with a little plastic support for the arrow which is great as that’s one less thing to worry about. Stand sideways, pull back the string, close your lead eye, aim in the direction of the target and let go.
Easy!
Except, there’s the twang on your fingers, thank heavens for the leather protectors. The twang on the nose happens if the string is pulled too far back and you hesitate when letting the fingers go. If you’re a woman not standing correctly there are other things that get twanged too… Twanging = fast learning.
It’s huge fun. It’s astonishingly addictive too but it’s not something I would want to take up as a full time hobby but as an occasional competition against friends for the honour of winning that all important and delightfully kitschy winged pen it’s definitely something I would recommend.
We were trained by the ever patient guys at 2020 Archery which has venues in London Bridge and Islington. Group bookings are recommended! www.2020archery.co.uk
( If you’re in Scotland and are inspired by our Andrea’s new experience give us a call and we’ll find a venue for you to try this out to.)
