World Conker Championships – 13th October 2013
Here at cushion the impact, we are quite partial to an obscure event or two. Pooh Sticks, National Shed Week and Jelly Bean Day are amongst our favourites. We have another wonderful alternative sporting event in store for you this month; The World Conker Championships.
If, like us, your experience of conkers mainly involved getting your knuckles battered by them in schoolyard contests, you may be surprised to learn that there is a genuine World Championships in existence. We promise it is a real event and it has been organised by Ashton Conker Club for almost fifty years. Since the inaugural World Conker Championships in 1965, teams from all over the world gather in Northamptonshire to determine the ultimate conker champion.
The second Sunday of October is the most important date in the conker enthusiast’s calendar, with this year’s event falling on Sunday 13th. If you can, make your way to the Shuckburgh Arms near Oundle to watch as the would-be champions take their places on the podiums to fight to the death. Ok, we may have been a little dramatic there but they will be fighting to the death of the conker at the end of their foot-long string. If you would like to take part, there’s still time; Juniors are welcome to just turn up on the day and the Men’s and Ladies’ categories may accept entries on the day.
The event starts at 10.30am on Sunday 13th, with plenty of entertainment for all the family. The event is for more than just deciding who is best at conkers; over £400,000 has been raised for the blind and visually impaired since the championships began. Spectator tickets are £2 per adult, £1 for seniors and children or £5 for a family ticket.
