Work Effectively Online – 3 Useful File-Sharing Services

BY cushion the impact

Now that everyone and their Granny has a smartphone or tablet, chances are you’ve moved away from working from the same computer day in and day out. We love being able to catch up on emails on the train, to work on spreadsheets at home (we do?!) and read articles whenever we find a spare five minutes.

It has done wonders for our productivity.

When you first start to work on the move, one thing will that will very quickly become evident is that saving your files onto your desktop is no longer an option. Make the most of modern technology by maximising the way it works for you. It is incredibly simple: get into the habit of saving documents, images and files to an online service.

This blog includes three of our favourite options but we would love to hear which resources have revolutionised the way you work. Don’t see your chosen option on the list? Add a comment to let us know what we’ve missed and we’ll check it out. We might even include it in the next instalment!

Dropbox

One of the most well-known of the file-sharing services, Dropbox is one we use a lot. Download the Dropbox App to your desktop or mobile device; add your documents, photos, videos, files and anything else you need to your folder and then access them wherever and whenever you want. You choose who can access your various folders so you can opt to keep some private, share some with colleagues for collaborative work and invite family and friends to view others.  There are a variety of Dropbox plans available, depending on how much storage you need and how you want to use the service, but the free option is plenty to get started with.

WeTransfer

How many times have you tried to email someone a large file but your email service rejects it because it’s too large. We like WeTransfer. It is a file-sharing service that allows users to transfer files of up to 2GB. There are two service options when signing up; a free account or a paid plus account. With the free account, you are allowed to send up to 2GB of data to up to 20 people per transfer.  Paid service users can transfer up to 10GB to up to 100 people at a time. Transferred files can be accessed and downloaded by recipients for up to 7 days, before being deleted from the server.

Google Drive

Google’s online storage service enables users to store up to 15GB of files, folders and documents completely free of charge.  If you don’t already have a Google or Gmail account, you will need to set one up before using Google Drive but, once your data has been uploaded, you will be able to access it from wherever you happen to be when you next need it. As well as the browser version, Google Drive can be accessed from a desktop application or an app on your iOS, Android, Blackberry or Windows Phone device.  As with most other similar services, you can choose which documents are private or who to share them with.
