Let’s Think!
Anyone who was a Girl Guide or Scout will be familiar with the concept of World Thinking Day. On 22nd February each year, the day of friendship, fundraising and advocacy is celebrated by all ten million guides and scouts around the world. Although we may have outgrown our place in the Girl Guides, we are still aware that World Thinking Day and the various events arranged in its honour do a lot of good worldwide.
The 2014 theme for World Thinking Day is education; specifically, working towards primary education for every child, no matter where they live or what means they have. The core messages communicated through the World Thinking Day literature are “every girl has the right to learning so she reaches her fullest potential” and “education opens doors for every boy and girl” and we think they speak volumes. Think of the difference even a basic education can make to a child’s life and how much most of us here in the UK take it for granted that we will get one.
If you agree that girls should be educated and given the opportunity to be all they can be, why not consider taking part or making even a small donation to the World Thinking Day Fund? All money raised is used to provide training, education and support to girls and young women around the globe. Previous funding has gone to the Girls Guides of Zimbabwe who bought a vehicle to enable them to reach girls in the most remote areas of the country and the Girl Guides of Haiti who received funding to build a new headquarters following the 2010 earthquake.
In many parts of the world, girls and young women are still not receiving the support and encouragement they need to be the best they can. We strongly believe that needs to change.
