20 a day challenge – part 2

BY Sue Williamson

So how did your first organisation week go last week? Did you tick off the 5 areas? If you missed them or want to start the challenge this week instead, they can be found here.

Here are the next 5 areas for you to work on in the 20 Organisational Checklist. Good luck and, remember, work in 10 minute chunks to keep the challenge manageable.

  1. Garage / Shed

I used to love my grandfather’s garage, he had one of those old Citroens which rose like a hovercraft. Between the exhaust fumes and the smell of wood he used to work with, I could spend hours sniffing the place. Again, set a timer and collect as many items you no longer use or need. Don’t worry if you need a few sessions to tackle this one, as garages tend to be home to those ‘this might come in handy in the future’ items. If you haven’t used something in the past 6 months or so, chances are you are not going to use it ever (although there are exceptions, of course). Be honest about what you need and be ruthless about the rest.

  1. Car

Grab two bags – one for rubbish and one for things to go back indoors.  Don’t just move the clutter from one place to another; put everything back to its proper place as soon as you get to the house/garage/shed. Don’t leave the bag in the hallway.

  1. Hall / Mudroom

See? Dumping that bag in the hall would have been counter-productive when you got to this point! When it comes to working on the hall, go through that vast collection of coats, shoes and accessories – get rid of moth eaten, holey, sad things. If you decide to keep something, make sure there is a home for it, and be strict about putting everything away properly after use.

  1. Junk drawer

You must have (at least) one of these somewhere in your house, I can’t be the only one! Again, have a bin bag at the ready and get rid of everything that is not needed.  Use plastic containers to store similar items together and prevent the drawer from descending into chaos again immediately.

  1. Medicine Cabinet/First Aid Supplies

Despite the tendency to have a medicine cupboard above the bathroom sink, medicine is best stored outside the bathroom in a cool, dry place out of the reach of children.   Return expired or unwanted prescription or over the counter medicines to your local chemist for proper disposal.
