How to improve productivity by tidying your desk
Hands up whose desk isn’t quite as tidy as they would like it to be?
Be honest!
If your desk is cluttered with paper, files, folders and who knows what else, it will be difficult to achieve the best of your potential. Think how much time you waste searching through the swamp of stuff every time you need to find something important.
Here’s how to declutter your desk and become a more efficient, productive you.
Top tips for a productively tidy working environment
- Dedicate one place on your desk for important paperwork. Remember physical inboxes? If your desk is covered with documents, you need to bring one back. Only one though!
- Keep your paper to a minimum. That means only printing what you need and getting fully into the habit of working with electronic copies of documents. Not always easy, I am a paper person but I am printing less that before.
- Clear off everything you don’t really need on your desk, and we mean everything.
- Set a time once a week or so (maybe once a fortnight when you’ve gotten into the swing of being more minimal) to declutter your desk once more so it’s never allowed to build up.
- If you’re not sure if you need a piece of paper, throw it out or scan it. You’d know if you needed it. Plus, you should be working with clutter-free PDFs by now anyway!
- Keeping a paper recycling bin near your desk will make it far easier to stick with your new habits.
- Clean your desk before you leave every day. Leave a work space you’d be happy for anyone to see.
