How to get up early and maximise productivity

There is some truth in the old adage, although we do know that there’s far more than your bedtimes at play when it comes to productivity.

In order to make the most of the 1,440 minutes you have every day, there are theories that you need to get out of bed early, as loathsome as the idea may seem (especially to Andrea). Lots of successful people do it.

If you’re not a natural morning person (and we can identify with that!), here are a few tips to make that early rise a little less painful.

Getting into the habit of waking up early

  • This may seem obvious, but the first step towards getting out of bed earlier is getting there sooner in the first place. If you can’t face plunging straight into an early bedtime, do it gradually. Try going to bed 15 minutes earlier each evening and see what difference it makes to your morning wakefulness
  • Make sure your alarm clock is out of reach. If you have to get out of bed to end the deafening noise, you’re more likely to stay out of bed. If you can simply roll over and snooze, chances are you will do that instead.
  • Keep the bedroom free of distraction. That means no backlit gadgets (yes, that includes your phone and Kindle), TVs or anything you don’t absolutely need to keep in the room. An early rise requires a good night’s sleep, which is far more achievable in a restful environment.
  • Just as you moved your bedtime earlier in small increments, the same should be done with your waking time. No good will ever come from suddenly getting up 2 or 3 hours earlier – it’s very, very unlikely to stick
  • Implementing a pleasant morning routine will make those early mornings more palatable. Whether it’s allowing time for a leisurely read of the newspapers, or a more relaxed breakfast than usual (or even having breakfast at all), factor in some time for enjoying the extra hours in your morning.
  • If you’re really struggling with rising earlier, splash some cold water on your face, stick the coffee pot on, and grin and bear it until it becomes your new normality. We do hope you manage to make the changes without resorting to this one too much!
