Beanotown at the Southbank Centre and Other Summer Holiday Entertainment

While children love the summer holidays, parents tend to have a slightly different view of the six weeks each year where their little darlings require constant entertainment. To help you plan the next month or so, we’ve put together this guide to family-friendly activities which won’t cost an arm and a leg. Sadly, we can’t guarantee a day without bickering…

Beanotown at the Southbank Centre

From now until 8th September, Dennis, Gnasher, The Bash Street Kids and other Beano favourites have set up camp in the Southbank Centre’s temporary Beanotown. Entry to the village is free and there is something to suit everyone in the family once you get inside. Rediscover old favourites from the Beano archives, attend one of the workshops, dress up as your favourite character and take a photo or learn all there is to know at The Ultimate Prank Academy. We accept no responsibility for any pranks or tricks your children may try at home!

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Built on the site of the 2012 Olympic stadium, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park finally opened its gates on 29th July. As well as the various sports facilities, the park has plenty on offer for families. The Timber Lodge and Tumbling Bay adventure playground provide the perfect location for discovering insects, building dens, exploring treetop walkways and generally harnessing those active imaginations while burning off some energy.  A range of activities and exhibitions are planned for the area, which also has a café onsite. Have a look at the park’s events schedule too; there may be a sporting or music event you would like to attend.

Dinosaur Zoo

If your little angels are obsessed with all things prehistoric, we bet they would love a visit to Dinosaur Zoo at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Running from now until 9th September, the show includes adorable baby dinosaurs to the ferocious Tyrannosaurus Rex and everything in between.  Children can even meet the puppet stars of the show on the lawn afterwards (if they are feeling brave enough!) The show is suitable from age three but be aware that rows 1-4 are classed as the Danger Zone.  A family ticket for Dinosaur Zoo costs £50.

Natural History Museum

We have yet to meet a child who does not adore the Natural History Museum. The Dinosaurs Gallery is open until September, ideal for the braver children who want to explore all things Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous. Advance booking is recommended for this particular exhibit. Even if you decide not to go to the Dinosaur Gallery, there is more than enough on offer in the museum to fill a day or two. Try the Wallace Discovery Trail, visit the Sensational Butterflies or just wander around the museum, taking in the wonders of the natural world.
