Dream Toys 2014 – The Top Toys This Christmas

BY cushion the impact

If you have any children in your family, we’re sure you’ve realised by now that the countdown to Christmas is well underway and the toy lists are definitely being made. If you want to get a head start on shopping before the letters to Santa Claus are written and the toy shops become (even more of) a hell on earth, you need to see the Toy Retailers’ Association’s Dream Toys 2014.

Regardless of the age or gender of the child you will be buying for, you can almost guarantee that at least one of these toys will show up on their wish-list.

We shall be avoiding all unnecessary gender stereotyping by just telling you what toys are popular; we see no need for otherwise-identical pink versions for girls!

Top 12 Toys for Christmas 2014

  • Hasbro Bop-It Beats – Bop-It has been a long-standing favourite amongst children and adults alike and it’s back with a brand new version this year. The game involves the usual testing of your reaction speeds, using popular songs by Avicii and Nicki Minaj to do it. Be prepared to lose hours of your Christmas to trying to defeat it…

  • Disney Frozen Snow Glow Elsa – You can’t possibly have lived through 2014 without being made aware of Frozen, so it should come as no surprised to find an Elsa doll on the Christmas hit list. This particular Elsa and Olaf combination features 15 phrases from the film, light up necklace and dress and, of course, a recording of Let It Go.

  • Disney Frozen Sparkle Elsa/AnnaAnd here it is again; Frozen dolls in the top 12. Basically, for Christmas 2014, Frozen is a sure-fire winner. These dolls are a tiny taster of the merchandise available and we’re certain that the Frozen fans in your life would be very appreciative of any of it!

  • Kidizoom Smart WatchWe may have to wait until 2015 for an Apple Watch, but there’s already a smartwatch on the market for the kids. This V-tech gadget can store around 900 photos or 15 minutes of video footage, as well as featuring an alarm, motion sensor, touchscreen, voice recorder and voice changing effects.

  • Little Live Pets Bird CageAll the birdsong and joy of owning a pet bird, without the mess or responsibility. The more you play with the bird, the happier it gets and the more it will sing to you. Little Live Pets Birds can even talk to you…

  • Minecraft FiguresMinecraft has proven to be just as massive a hit as Frozen, if not more so, and there is no shortage of gift options for the young fan. Minecraft figures can be found in all toy shops and there is a huge selection to choose from.

  • My Friend Cayla Cayla is the doll you can talk to just like a friend. She is compatible with mobile devices via an app, making her a safer way for children to interact with the internet. The safe-search filters mean children can’t accidentally access inappropriate content, giving you peace of mind and them the freedom they want to go online. What’s more, you can ask Cayla questions or play games with her, rather than just using a tablet or computer.

  • Nerf Demolisher 2-in-1You cannot go wrong with a Nerf gun. Whether you choose the specific Demolisher that made the list, go for a smaller version, or branch out into the Nerf range of crossbows, it’s bound to go down a storm with the recipient. Just be careful – those bullets travel further than you may expect.

  • Lego Movie Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!Recreate some of the favourite scenes from the Lego Movie with the very exciting SPACESHIP! and police interceptor. We always find the biggest challenge with Lego is getting the adults to put it down and let the children take a turn!

  • Toot Toot Animals Safari ParkThis is an excellent gift option for pre-school children, aimed at those aged between 1 and 5. Featuring a safari park setting complete with rhino, animal sound effects, jingles, launcher and spinning alligator pool, it’s bound to keep little minds busy for hours. There are plenty of add-ons too, giving you instant ideas for birthdays!

  • Transformers Stomp & Chomp Grimlock Transformers are much-loved by children and (if Susan’s family are anything to go by) loved less by the parents who have to spent aeons trying to figure out how to actually transform the things. They are a lot of fun and this massive Grimlock, complete with small Optimus Prime, is an excellent option.

  • Zoomer Dino BoomerDescribed as a prehistoric pet for the modern age, Boomer is a robotic dinosaur who can chomp, chase and guard as he sees fit. Of course, he can also roar. Children can use their hands and movement to tame Boomer and make friends with him, giving them even more control over his actions.
