Great and new restaurants in Edinburgh

BY cushion the impact

Edinburgh is a beautiful city at any time of the year but there is something about winter that makes it seem almost magical. Whether you live near the city or are planning a short city break soon, here are a few new eateries for you to try. If you’re like us, the food can make or break the entire weekend.

Chaophraya

Not content with opening the UK’s biggest Thai restaurant in Glasgow, Chaophraya are expanding into Edinburgh, with a new restaurant due to open this month. As well as serving consistently high-quality food in the restaurant, Chaophraya also offers private dining and cooking masterclasses. The menu includes traditional dishes such as tempura prawns and Thai red and green curries alongside fusions like scallops and black pudding.

Proposed address: 33 Castle Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3DN

Kyloe Restaurant & Grill

Edinburgh’s first gourmet steak restaurant recently celebrated its first birthday and that first year has gone very well indeed.  In addition to enjoying views of the castle from this first floor restaurant, guests can choose from dishes such as steak tartare, Loch Etive mussels, Chateau Briand and risotto of beetroot. Although it is primarily a steak restaurant, the menu is varied enough to suit most tastes. A main course at Kyloe (which is an old Scots word for Highland cattle, fact fans) will cost around £16.

Galvin Brasserie de Luxe

Located within the Waldorf Astoria Caledonian hotel, Galvin Brasserie de Luxe recreates a traditional Parisian brasserie in the heart of Edinburgh.  Whether you choose to dine from the prix fixe menus while sitting at the circular bar, or a la carte while taking in the sights of the crustacean centrepiece, the restaurant promises joie de vivre and good quality, reasonably price fare. The menu changes regularly but sample dishes include tagine of lamb with harissa rose, risotto of roast pumpkin and sage, smoked salmon, blini and crème fraiche and roast tranche of cod, cockle and parsley risotto. Main courses are priced between £12 and £26.

Timberyard

Although Andrew and Lisa Radford were forced to close their earlier Edinburgh restaurant, they are now back with a bang with this fabulous family affair. Not only do the Radford’s own it, their son is head chef, another son heads up the bar and daughter deals with social media and photography. Designed to be aware of sustainability and the environment, Timberyard sources ingredients from local, artisan suppliers.  There are also plans to introduce a crop-growing area, art exhibition and a wood-burning stove.  Menu offerings include razor clams, Anglesey bass, mallard breast and pumpkin tart. Dishes are classified into three categories; bites, small and large; and are priced between £2 and £18
