Have a historic Happy Easter
You can be forgiven for thinking that Easter is aimed at the younger generation. Although I’m pretty sure that some adults may relish in the dressing up as bunnies and decorating everything chocolatey in sight, try something different this Easter and take in the historic delights right on your doorstep.
Hot Cross Buns! Who doesn’t love a good raisin infested bun? If you fancy something a little traditional and typically English then this bun celebrating ceremony is for you. The Widow’s Son Pub in Bromley-by-Bow in East London has a rather quaint tradition: each year a sailor adds to the collection of Hot Cross Buns in honour of a widow who baked a bun for her only son who died whilst at sea. A quaint ceremony to be seen on Good Friday. The Widow’s Son, 75 Devons Road, Bow Common, London E3 3PJ Tel: 020 7515 9072
For a chocolate free afternoon head down to the Natural History Museum where you can wander aimlessly around the wildlife garden to engross yourself in the thousands of British plants and wildlife. The beautiful spring flowers are in bloom, you can also see dedicated gardens such as woodland, pond life and much more.
Instead of watching the 158th Boat Race on the television this year get out there and be a part of the action, standing at one of the many vantage points between Putney Bridge and Chiswick Bridge. If you can’t get to the Thames, try one of the large screens placed in Furnivall Gardens and Bishops Park to name but two. Who will you be rooting for?
April 7th, 2.15 pm.
Make it a very Happy Easter and take a tour around the sets of the Harry Potter films at the Warner Bros Studios. Now I know what you are thinking – isn’t Harry Potter for children? Well actually, it isn’t (not only anyway). The appeal of these successful books and films is widespread, engrossing children to adults in the amazing wizard-like adventures. Located in Watford, you will need to book tickets for this amazing day out. For the ultimate fan, this would be an egg-citing (groan) Easter indeed.
The National Maritime Museum has an Easter display focused upon their Titanic Remembered exhibition. This display has proved very popular, but there are still a few days left to go along and read personal accounts as told by survivors. A very moving and compelling display, be sure not to miss it. The exhibition closes on April 13.
Visit Kenwood House, an historic English Heritage property, for the chance to walk around the amazing grounds and gardens, and historic house which once belonged to brewer Edward Cecil Guiness. Don’t miss the stunning views across London from Hampstead Heath. Take the young ones along this weekend as there will also be an Easter Hunt from Friday 6th – Monday 9th. Kenwood House, Hampstead NW3 7JR
Breathe in a part of history this Easter weekend and expand your English knowledge a little; if only for the Pub quiz at your local. Just don’t forget the chocolate fixes for the journey, well, we’ve got to eat haven’t we?
