Pop-up restaurants in London

Street eats and pop-up restaurants took London by storm in 2011 and, while many believed they were to be a short-lived fad, the phenomenon is still going strong. Each month sees a host of temporary eateries appear around the capital, offering Londoners the chance to try all kinds of new foods. Few of us have time (or funds!) to visit them all but, if you choose just one pop-up restaurant this month, make it one of these.

Propstore (Until 29 September)

The National Theatre’s own pop-up restaurant and café-bar is special for a reason other than the great food. The riverfront venue is decorated with props from numerous National Theatre productions – the Thought-Catcher from Beauty & The Beast, the crocodile from Peter Pan and a goose puppet from War Horse are just a few of the familiar items you may spot while enjoying your meal. Propstore is open from 12pm daily and runs late night DJ and music sessions until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights. If cheap yet delicious street food such as pulled pork, kebabs and salad, accompanied with draught beer and English wines floats your boat, take the time out to visit. Most items on the Propstore menu cost around £4.

The Cube by Electrolux (Until 30 September)

Pop-ups don’t need to be cheap and cheerful as this luxurious rooftop restaurant proves. Electrolux have created an amazing, high-end eatery on the roof of the Royal Festival Hall, where diners can enjoy food prepared by some of the UK’s greatest chefs. It is mainly a promotional exercise but don’t let that put you off – where else can you sample food by Tom Kitchin, Sat Bains and Claude Bosi while taking in the iconic scenes of London alongside just 17 other diners? Of course, an experience like this doesn’t come cheap. Lunch is served at noon each day costing £175 per head, while a seat at the 7.15pm dinner will set you back £215 each. Ticket cost includes a champagne reception, minimum six course tasting menu and wines.

Magnum London (20th July – 5th September)

This particular pop-up is a must for ice-cream fiends! If you plan to spend a day shopping in Westfield this summer, take some time out of your retail therapy to enjoy some customised Magnum ice-cream and the Magnum Infinity Pleasure Pod. There is little in life more pleasing than a delicious dessert and that is something you are guaranteed to get. Take an ice-cream, coat it in your choice of chocolate and then choose from 18 toppings including rose petals, popping candy and chilli. If that’s not enough, there is also a selection of Magnum-inspired cocktails and desserts on offer.  Designing your own Magnum costs £3.

The Dead Dolls Club Summer Affair (Until end August)

Running each Saturday during the summer, with a special extended session on the last Saturday of each month, the Dead Dolls Club Summer Affair is the perfect place for lovers of excellently simple meat and beers. Live music, DJs, assorted stalls, beer from the London Brewery and fantastic meats cooked in a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang-style smoker are what you’ll find at this pop-up. Those arriving early to the monthly event can enjoy lessons from master butchers on how to cut the meat which will be enjoyed later. Tickets to the event cost £30.
