2 Hours Left for April Fools!

“The First of April, some do say

Is set apart for All Fools’ Day;

But why the people call it so,

Not I, nor they themselves do know.”

As well as being Easter Monday today, it is the 1st of April, which we all know is April Fools’ Day. Love it or loathe it, it’s the day for playing tricks on your friends, family and colleagues; sending them out for tartan paint, elbow grease or a long weight.

The exact origins of April Fools’ Day aren’t known, but it is widely believed to be related to the changing of the calendar in the sixteenth century.  The current Gregorian calendar changed the start of the year from 1st April to 1st January and it is thought that the terms April Fools’ Day and All Fools’ Day originated from some nations continuing to celebrate the New Year in April, despite the changes. Other explanations include Noah releasing a dove from the Ark on 1st April to search for dry land on a world covered by water and Greek goddess Demeter who mistook her own calls for her missing daughter’s voice and ended up both without her daughter and lost herself.

Regardless of how it all started, if you plan to indulge in some tomfoolery today, you will need to be quick; you only have until noon to carry out your pranks. If you think you can top the BBC’s spaghetti tree prank of 1957 , Google Gulp, the smart drink that can make you more intelligent (2005), Burger King’s Left Handed Whoppers from 1998 or Ikea’s high chair for dogs from 2011, you better act fast. After all, once the clock passes noon:

“April Fools’ Day is passed and gone

You’re the fool and I am none”
