This weekend you can choose between the Grand National the greatest steeplechase in the world founded in 1839. Did you know that Becher’s Brook is named after a rider in the first ever race called Captain Becher who parted company at the brook that day?
Your other choice of historic sporting event is The Melrose Sevens the oldest Rugby Seven tournament in the world founded in 1883 in this lovely Scottish Borders town. Now the abbreviated game is played all over the world with glamorous tournaments as far afield as Hong Kong and Dubai.
