4 Things to do in London after the Paralympics

BY cushion the impact

When the cauldron was extinguished last week it marked the end of what had become a huge part of daily life for many of us in London and around the world. The Olympic Games seemed to have lasted for far longer than a fortnight, but had passed by so quickly at the same time. If you’re at a bit of a loss as to how to spend your free time now that the Games are over, read on for a few examples of the great events and attractions still happening in the city.

The Great River Race 2012 – September 15th

This Jubilee-year Great River Race will start from London’s Docklands at 10.40am on 15 th September and end 21 miles away in Ham, Surrey. Billed as the London River Marathon, the race attracts thousands of visitors from far and wide each year, all eager to catch a glimpse of the three hundred competing boats. Competitors range from serious sportspeople to those doing it in fancy dress to raise money for a charity close to their hearts. The race can be watched from various bridges along the route and those wishing to get closer to the action can book a spot on a spectator boat.

City Jogging Tours

If the Olympic Legacy has rekindled an interest in running, why not pop along to one of the City Jogging Tours? As the name suggests, the tour involves jogging around the sights and attractions of London. Book a place on one of the tours to see the sights of the big smoke as you exercise and (hopefully!) you will barely notice that you are running 7km! Those less keen on the jogging aspect can partake in a City Walking Tour or a City Pilates, Yoga or Fitness session. Booking is essential for all activities.

London Design Festival – September 14th-23rd

The annual London Design Festival is celebrating its tenth anniversary this September by running hundreds of events across the city. There is so much going on that you really need to plan your itinerary in advance but some highlights include Super Brands London in the east, 100% Design in the west and an exhibition at the V&A. The exhibition will see the public allowed to access previously unseen parts of the museum. The festival will feature all kinds of design from interiors, furniture, fabrics and craft to graphic design, architecture and digital design. With over 300 events in total, we would advise you to plan your visit carefully!

Up at the O2 – Until February 29th 2016

Seeing as this particular attraction will be on-going for quite some time, it may be worth pencilling it in on a day when you plan to visit the O2 for another event. Having said that, it’s definitely worthy of a trip all of its own! The 90 minute tour takes place on the roof of the iconic venue, viewing London from the platform in its centre before taking what is described as a “thrilling descent back to base” when it is time to come down again. One can only assume it’s not for the faint hearted… Tickets cost from £22 and the exact details of the tour are weather-dependant.
