20 a day challenge – part 3
How are you getting on with parts 1 and 2 of my Challenge? I hope it’s going well – here’s part 3 to help you become even more organised.
Remember to work in ten-minute chunks to keep it achievable.
- Cleaning Supplies
How many duplicates have you accidentally (or deliberately) stockpiled? Break this habit! The world isn’t going to run out of bleach/toilet cleaner/anti-bacterial wipes anytime soon. Use multipurpose cleaners wherever possible. Amalgamate all partially filled bottles of the same product into one container. More space instantly! Replace old cleaning cloths and sponges on a regular basis or run them through the dishwasher or washing machine on a hot wash.
- Fridge and Freezer
Discarding out of date or unlikely to be used foods. Again, combine duplicates into one container and dispose of packaging where possible to free up space. Put similar items together so you know instantly where they are, my other half is one of those men who looks without seeing so I know I can tell him eggs middle shelf in the door. Check out Which’s suggestions for the best storage places for different foods.
- Kitchen Cabinets
Do you need that 25-year old blender? Or the vegetable steamer/bread maker/insert appliance here which is still sitting in its box? No. You don’t. Rehome any appliances and gadgets you don’t need or use and marvel at the space you have instantly created. Next, make sure all of your Tupperware has matching lids and stack them inside each other to maximise space. Throw out those takeaway containers you have been keeping “just in case” – you do not need them!
- Dining Area
Keeping your dining table free of clutter can be a difficult resolution to keep. It is all too tempting to use it as a storage area for clean laundry, paperwork yet to be dealt with and other random household detritus that hasn’t quite made it to its proper home yet. Put everything in its proper place and, if it hasn’t got one, add it to your garbage bag.
- Entertainment
CDs, DVDs, videos, games boxes can really add to the cluttered feel of your home. I know you probably feel quite attached to them (remember when we used to record onto video… I still have some, terrible quality most of them!) but do you really need to keep all of them? Any which remain in their cellophane wrappers should be immediately put aside for charity or Freecycling. Go through the rest, being honest about what ones you are likely to watch or listen to again. Don’t keep anything that hasn’t got a box to go with it (or any empty boxes, for that matter!).
