Best Back to Work Strategies After Easter
We hope you all had a fantastic long weekend but, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end (four day weekends included).
It can be a struggle to get back into the swing of things, both now and after a lengthier summer holiday, and we can all make use of some tips to make the transition smoother.
To help ease you back in to the daily grind, here are a few of our top back to work strategies.
Top tips for back to work
The first, and most important, back to work tip is to start as you mean to go on. Every time you return from a break, you have the opportunity to shed some bad habits and adopt some far more productive ones. Here’s how to do it:
Be ruthless – No matter what your actual job is, time is your most valuable resource and one you can only ever have a certain amount of. Choose between three and five things you want to achieve before the end of each week, and make sure they get done. You should also think about what people you want to spend working time with, and fit them into your schedule. Regardless of what else may pop up, achieving these things and seeing these people will give you a guaranteed sense of achievement.
End meetings – Maybe you cannot actually eradicate meetings from your working life, but you can set a resolution only to attend those which are absolutely necessary. Another top tip is to avoid having food and drink in meetings, as these tend to make them last longer and can encourage off-topic chatting.
Efficient emails – Once you have written an email, read over it and edit it down to only what you need to say. This may mean deleting a few words, and it may mean losing over half the content. If it doesn’t need to be said, don’t say it! You’ll only bog the recipient down and potentially end up with a response that doesn’t include the required information.
Learn to say “no” – Don’t jeopardise your own productivity and wellbeing by taking on too much for other people. If you say no enough, it will truly be appreciated when you say yes and you will soon get into the habit of saying yes only when a tasks is genuinely worthy of your time.
Be kind to yourself – If you don’t take care of yourself, who will? Don’t let your wellbeing go by the wayside as soon as you’re back in the workplace. Take regular breaks, go home at a reasonable hour and turn off your work phone and emails while you’re there. If you have identified something that definitely improves (or declines!) your wellbeing, make sure to do it (or avoid it) as appropriate.
