Christmas Markets – (or get away and avoid the Christmas Rush!)
John Clark a friend of ours from Travel Counsellors says…
Christmas markets are becoming more popular and a good excuse to grab a mini break before the rush of Christmas Shopping, and many people use them to get presents that are out of the ordinary than what you would buy in the shops during the rush in the UK.
The most popular destinations for the markets are Salzburg, Bruges, Berlin, Munich, Prague, Bale, and Brussels. Out of all these superb cities, if you want to do a bit of shopping as well as a bit of culture, why not visit Salzburg and take in some of the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery in the whole of Europe, visit the Eagles Nest in Bavaria, the quaint little village of Montsee, or the Red Bull factory.
No trip to Salzburg would be complete of course without going on “The Sound Of Music “ tour visiting all the sites made famous in the movie, this wonderful city appeals to all ages, young or old, couples, and families, and as for the Christmas market in Salzburg? – Salzburg is very Christmassy! Be enchanted by Cathedral Square, the traditional booths, the strings of lights and the quality of the diversified items on sale, from traditional handicrafts, fine baked goods, aromatic tree ornaments, and various objet d’art for the Christmas season. The delicious smell of mulled wine wafts around the booths, and reminds you of what Christmases used to be like in years gone by.
Berlin: Charlottenburg Palace is by far the most spectacular and popular Christmas market in the German Capital, set against the backdrop of the imposing Schloss Charlottenburg and occupying the entire grounds and courtyards.150 exhibitors from across Europe offer authentic, handmade, natural goods and produce.
The markets in the cities mentioned above all start approximately round the 18th November and go on passed Christmas until the 2nd January, so you have plenty of time to fit that break in. A four day break which includes flights, accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis and your airport transfers included start from as little as £284 per person, sharing a twin room. So this would not make a big hole in your pocket just before Christmas, and would be a nice way to get away from it all for a few days.
