Cowes Week 2012

The annual sailing regatta which takes place in Cowes each August is widely considered the premier event of its kind in the world, attracting both amateur and professional competitors as well as thousands of spectators.  Even if you have no interest in sailing yourself, the festival is well worth a visit for its unique atmosphere and experience.

This year’s event will run from 11th to 18th of August, with every day promising a jam-packed schedule of sailing, on-shore entertainment and culinary delights.  Friday night normally sees the famous firework display light up the sky above Cowes, although this is yet to be confirmed for 2012. With just 25 days to go until Cowes Week 2012 starts, it’s time to start planning which of the events you want to attend.  We’re sure competitors will have their itineraries ready but here are some of the options available to spectators.

In the water:

Even if you’re not taking part in the regatta itself, you can still hop aboard a boat and test out your sea legs. As always, there are a few options available to spectators who fancy taking to the water themselves;  hour long trips on the spectator boat set off at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm from Trinity Landing; ribs can be chartered from Solent Ribs for the week or for a day at a time, with the choice of having a skipper or doing it yourself and the more adventurous visitor can book a place on a high speed Rigid Inflatable Powerboat.  This last option involves getting very wet, going very fast and is definitely not for the faint-hearted!

In the air

As well as the usual range of water options, Cowes Week 2012 welcomes a new type of spectator entertainment.  Helicopter flights will be available throughout the festival, with a choice of three options.  Visitors can take a tour of Cowes on a short, 5 minute flight for £35, a 15 minute flight for £95 or a 30 minute full circuit of the island for £195.

On the ground

Don’t worry if you prefer to keep your feet on solid ground, there will still be plenty for you to do. Each day holds live music performances, fun races and invitation-only special events. Highlights of the week include a display by the Royal Navy Solo Lynx on Saturday 11th, T-Rextasy on Wednesday 15th and, fingers crossed, the fireworks display on Friday 17th.  The full entertainment line-up can be found on the Cowes Week 2012 website

Family Day:

Following the success of the first Family Day, Sunday 12th is to be Family Day at the 2012 Cowes Week.  Planned events include a flag-making contest, model boat racing, a Robbie Williams tribute act and a selection of other live music performers.
