De-clutter for National Organising Week 2014
This week is the 1st National Organising Week in the UK. We are very pleased to see one of our favourite topics marked with its very own event.
You know we love de-cluttering and, with over a decade of experience, we’re very good at it indeed.
Whether your hoarding happens in your office or at home (or both!), our team can transform your space from chaos to calm. Just get in touch for more information.
If you’re not quite ready to reveal the extent of your disorganisation, or you would like to learn some better habits going forward, these de-cluttering tips will help you to make a dent in the mountain.
The do’s and don’ts of de-cluttering your life
DO
- DO make the most of the storage you have. This includes adding dividers to drawers to remove the temptation to “just fling it in”. Bedside cabinets, desk drawers and ‘that’ drawer in the kitchen are the worst offenders when it comes to clutter. Now is the time to break that habit
- DO use labels. Whether it’s in your food cupboard, stationery cupboard, children’s toy room or elsewhere, define a place for everything and keep everything in its place
- DO be ruthless. If you haven’t used something for six months, you’re unlikely to need it (winter duvets notwithstanding). No maybes or buts; get rid of it. We will allow special dispensation for items of particular sentimental value, but be honest about how much things really mean to you
- DO set yourself a smaller goal if you’re finding it difficult to start.
- DO set up a filing system. No more sticking letters, documents and papers randomly into a drawer or box; learn how to file them quickly and you’ll be able to find what you need in seconds
- DO ake photos. Once you’ve finished de-cluttering and put everything in its place, take photos of how each room and storage area should look. This will be particularly helpful when trying to get children to tidy up!
DON’T
- DON’T buy a load of new storage boxes and units before sorting through your things. Buy what you need to store what you intend to keep once you’re done
- DON’T set your goals too high. Tackling the whole house or office at once will only leave you demotivated and giving up halfway through. Take on a room at a time instead
- DON’T keep your charity bags in the house. Once you have filled them, get them to the car and get them donated. Don’t let them work their way back into your stash
- DON’T forget to follow up. One-off de-cluttering is no use to anyone. Now that you have an expertly-organised home or office, you will need to regularly review it and make sure it stays that way
- DON’T forget that you actually live and work there. Your home or office is not a catalogue or Pinterest photo, so don’t drive yourself insane trying to make it look like one. A little lived-in is absolutely normal and perfectly fine
- DON’T forget we are here to help you, whether for a few hours or a couple days; whether your office, study, garage, lounge or bedroom.
