Major British Rowing Event: The Head of The River Race 2013. Registration Now Open.

BY cushion the impact

The Head of the River Race is one of Britain’s biggest rowing races, with over 3,500 participants from around the globe taking part each year. This year’s race is due to take place on Sunday 23rd March at 12.45pm.

In March each year, rowers participating in the race take their places at the starting point in Mortlake before rowing along the Tideway to Putney. With over 400 crews with eight members each, The Head of the River Race is quite a spectacular event.

Crews wishing to enter the race have until 5pm on 22nd February to submit their applications online. Applications are subject to British Rowing rules and regulations; details of which can be found online; and only 400 crews can be accepted to the race. The organisers ask entrants to note that Scottish crews should pay particular attention to the rules and that female rowers are only permitted in the role of coxswain.  The Women’s Head of the River Race will take place on the Tideway on 9th March.

If you don’t intend to row but would like to enjoy the race from dry land instead, the best viewing spots are said to be Hammersmith Bridge and the Putney Embankment. We will have our fingers crossed for good weather for both participants and spectators!
