International Women’s Day 2016

BY Sue Williamson

March 8th every year is International Women’s Day, a date we feel quite strongly about as it celebrates the achievements of women worldwide. This year, in addition to marking social, political, economic and cultural achievements of women, International Women’s Day is promoting a call to action to accelerate gender parity. According to EY, sponsors of IWD, it’s going to take another 117 years to achieve parity but, the more people who get involved and pledge to make a difference, the shorter that countdown will be.

If you’d like to add your support to IWD, take to social media and make use of the event hashtag – #pledgeforparity.

There are numerous International Women’s Day events across the UK, and the world, on and around March 8th, details of which can be found on the IWD website. If you’re in London, the Women of the World Festival at the South Bank Centre is where you need to be.

Between 8th and 13th March, all manner of talks, workshops and activities will take place at the South Bank Centre, each with the aim of celebrating women’s achievements and working towards removing obstacles and defeating challenges.

Some of the events on offer include:

  • Wonderwomen – a debate aimed at 11-18 year old girls on 8th Let’s help the next generation to achieve all they can!
  • Women Take the Lead – Traditional dances taught with a difference (which is totally given away by the name!) No booking is required for this free event; just rock up to the Southbank Centre if you fancy joining in.
  • Caitlin Moran’s Moranfesto. Tickets must be booked in advance.
  • Acts of Looking: Digital Projection Series – a free event where interested visitors can just show up between 6pm and 11pm on 11th March
  • The Fruit Trilogy – a performance by West Yorkshire Playhouse. Tickets are required, booking here

Friday is packed with fantastic talks including The Gender Pay Gap – What Can YOU Do?, Bringing Your Whole Self to Work and Food and Feminism.

Really, there are far too many events we want to attend – we cannot possibly fit even half of them into a blog post! Each event has its own ticketing or WOW Pass requirement, so make sure you check the What’s On section of the website to avoid disappointment.

If you visit the WOW Festival, or host your own celebration of International Women’s Day, please leave a comment and let us know what you’ve done and how you enjoyed it.
