July Newsletter
Aside from our fantastic (even if we do say so ourselves) course, July is a busy month in London. Andy Murray was crowned champion at Wimbledon, the Henley Regatta delighted its audience once more and there are a plethora of shows, gigs and events for you to choose from.First, why not take part in our fun survey about time management?
Go:
To the top floor of the O2 to take in the British Music Experience. The installation, which will be in place until February, is packed full of fantastic music memorabilia. Get a closer look at David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust costume, Noel Gallagher’s Union Jack guitar and a Sex Pistols’ Vivienne Westwood tartan bondage suit before moving on to the interactive side of the exhibition. Visit the Gibson Interactive Music Studio to get a taste of what it’s like to record your own track or join in with one of the workshops running on selected dates.
To the Coronation Festival 2013 at Buckingham Palace. Celebrate the Queen’s 60th anniversary in style at this one-off, four-day festival. The festival will run in the Palace Gardens from 12th-14th July, with four separate sections offering a range of attractions to visitors. If the daytime celebrations are not enough, why not buy a ticket for the Evening Gala held on the Friday and Saturday evenings.
Do:
Take a trip down memory lane by visiting the V&A’s latest exhibition. From Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 80s will remind you of your old favourites and sartorial disasters you might be desperate to forget. Opening on 10th July, the exhibition will celebrate iconic trends such as New Romantic and High Camp, as well as other memorable club and catwalk looks.
Pop along to the rather eccentric Chap Olympiad on 13th July. This very unusual “sporting” event is billed as “a celebration of athletic ineptitude and immaculate trouser creases”. There is a dress code of elegant finery, military wear, formal wear, dandy wear, no sportswear except cricket whites and absolutely no denim, the highly-competitive pipeathlon, ironing board surfing and umbrella jousting championships. Tickets are available here.
See:
Some of the 2013 Edinburgh Preview Shows. If you can’t make it to the Scottish capital the Canada Water Culture Space is where you should be. From 13th-27th July, various acts will be testing their material on a willing London audience, before travelling north to the infamous Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Details of the acts involved and ticketing information can be found online.
Comedy gold from the comfort of your very own….hot tub?! If outdoor cinemas are becoming a little boring, why not go one step further by booking a hot tub with some friends and enjoying some favourite films on an East London rooftop? Hot Tub Cinema’s Summer of Tub will be continuing for two weeks in July.
Buy:
Something beautiful from Amanda Mercer. This talented designer creates all kinds of ceramic delights; from amber and jade butterfly brooches and keepsake cards to bird houses, ceramic bunting and luggage tags. It is far too hard for us to pick favourites so visit her website and discover it all for yourself.
A typographic map of Central London. We know, we had no idea we needed one of these either. Seagull Hut stock a fantastic range of typographic maps; if Central London isn’t enough, try the Greater London map. Or how about a typographic map of one of your favourite cities? Amsterdam, San Francisco and Rome are all available.
Eat:
At the Mozzarella & More on the King’s Road. Andrea recently enjoyed a delicious sharing plate lunch (the burrata was divine!) and can highly recommend treating yourself to a dessert afterwards. The menu changes daily but always features authentic ingredients such a range of focaccias, buffalo mozzarella, squid ink tagliolini and a variety of pasta dishes. Keep an eye on our blog for more on Andrea’s visit.
At what will quite possibly be the most impressive barbecue in London ever. Meatopia doesn’t actually open until September but, if you want to get in on the action, you will need to act quickly and grab your tickets now. New York’s famous meat festival will be visiting Tobacco Docks, cooking locally-sourced meat over real firewood and charcoal before serving it with a range of artisan ales, fine wines and high quality spirits. In London for one day only!
