London to Brighton Veteran Car Run
If you’re looking for something a bit different to do next weekend, why not pay a visit to the world’s longest running motoring event? The first Sunday of each November is a major date on the calendars of veteran car owners, as the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run sets off once again. This year’s event will take place on Sunday 4th November, with various events running from Friday 2nd.
The first Veteran Car Run was organised in 1927 to commemorate the Emancipation Run of 1896, which raised the speed limit to 14 miles per hour and removed the need for a man with a red flag to walk ahead. The Royal Automobile Club officially took over the running of the event in 1930 and it has run every November since, proving popular with the general public, celebrities and royalty alike. The 76th annual run will start from the traditional location in London’s Hyde Park from 7am on the Sunday.
Approximately 500 veteran cars will travel from Hyde Park to Madeira Drive in Brighton and spectators are welcome to line the route and cheer on the drivers. The route sticks as closely as possible to the original route, which encompasses Westminster Bridge, Lambeth, Brixton, Streatham, Norbury, Croydon, Purley and Crawley, where an official mid-way checkpoint will be set up. The full route can be viewed on the Spectator Map.
Spectators who want to follow the route can book a place on one of the Open Top Bus Tours. The tour is priced at £89 per person and can be booked via the Veteran Car Run website.
Anyone who owns a veteran car and would like to take part in the run can still book a place by visiting the official website. Full details on eligibility is also available online.
While the run is always very exciting for both participants and spectators, it is only part of the entertainment available on the weekend. Regent Street Motor Show in London will run from 10am until 4pm on Saturday 3rd November, which is open to the public and free of charge. Various related events such as a VCR auction in Bonhams on Bond Street on Friday and a lunch at the Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall on Saturday will also take place. If you plan to attend any of the events, make sure to book in advance and check the website closer to the time, as schedule changes may be made.
