Optimising Your Morning Routine – Part 1

Hands up who is a morning person?

We didn’t think so… Very few of us are able to spring out of bed, get ready and head off cheerily for an incredibly productive day at the coalface. Sadly, every one of us needs to spring out of bed, get ready and head off to whatever our day holds. As part of our quest to introduce better time management to as many people as possible, here are a few tips for a smoother morning.

Create a to-do list

Yes, again! Getting into the habit of creating and using to-do lists, they really can make every task in your life more organised and less stressful – including having to leave your cosy bed in the morning. Before you go to bed at night, make a note of everything you need to do in the morning. This will keep it all fresh in your mind and prevent any unexpected disasters or delays before you leave.

Sleep well

We know it is easier said than done when you are under pressure, but getting a good night’s sleep will make your morning routine a lot easier. Try to get to bed at a decent time and implement a relaxing, calm bedtime routine. Following the same routine and sticking to the same bedtime every night will help to make you more relaxed and rested.  Proper sleep will also keep your brain more alert, meaning you will be more productive and creative the next day.

Choose what to wear

Another task for the evening before is checking the weather forecast and planning your outfit accordingly. Think how much time you could save by removing the morning dash for something which is suitable, clean and ironed. Lay everything out before you go to bed; your outfit, underwear, accessories, shoes, the lot! If you want to make this even easier, try streamlining your wardrobe by removing anything that no longer fits well and putting unseasonal clothes into storage. Vacuum bags are fantastic for this. Pack your bag

Remove even more stress from your mornings by packing everything you need into your bag at night. Laptop, work phone, purse, keys… Whatever you need, make sure it is in that bag before you go to sleep.  For women with many handbags, this process can be simplified by choosing a purse which can be used with all bags, or by putting the contents of each bag or purse into a clear plastic bag. When you swap bags, just swap the inner bag across. Put your packed bag near the front door, all ready to go.

Don’t forget your keys

We are willing to bet that one of the major delays you face each morning is related to your keys. This one is very easy to solve – hang them on a designated hook or place them in a designated dish. Get into the habit of doing this as soon as you enter the house or lock the door and they will (!) never get lost again.
