We all want to be more productive but few of us are sure how to achieve that. Contrary to popular belief, being productive is not about ticking fifty tasks off that day’s to-do list. Being productive actually means doing less; it’s about streamlining your work and cutting out all of those unnecessary, non-value-adding tasks cluttering your schedule. To get started, have a brief insight into a day in the life of a truly productive person.

Shrink your to-do list

As we mentioned, being productive is about streamlining your workload. Have a look at your to-do list and decide what really needs to be there. Be ruthless – if it won’t add any value to your day or make a difference to a project, remove it. Your time is precious and should only be spent on tasks which really deserve a share of it.

Take regular breaks

When we have a lot on our plates, our natural reaction is to work continuously, slogging away until we have finished. Working this way is incredibly unproductive. To achieve maximum productivity, you need to relax. Taking regular breaks allows you to clear your mind, re-focus and stay motivated. Going for a short walk, having something to eat or even taking five minutes to have a coffee can recharge your batteries and leave you ready to tackle the next chunk of work.

Don’t put off the hard tasks

Another natural instinct is the one which tells us to do easier tasks first and put that one off for as long as possible. In fact, for most people challenging work should be done first thing in the morning, when your brain is fresh and motivation levels are high. It can be a tough habit to break but you will notice a significant difference once you crack it.
