5 productivity tips for introverts

If you consider yourself to be once of life’s introverts (as Susan does), the idea of networking, making presentations and “putting yourself out there” quite possibly makes your blood run cold. They may be a necessary evil, but they are certainly one where extroverts seem to have the upper hand. However, there are some areas of productivity where introverts excel.

While those crowded events may be your idea of hell, tasks which involve concentration, self-motivation and extended periods of working alone are likely to be where you truly come into your own.

Here are a few of our top tips for embracing your strengths and becoming an impressively productive introvert.

Productivity for introverts

Be ruthless with potential distractions – You know that you work very well alone, so make sure to do your best to avoid allowing others to hamper your productivity. Set aside time to check emails, update social networks and return telephone calls. When ideas and reminders come to mind, write them down for auctioning later – don’t sabotage your own achievements!

Make the most of your mornings – If you are an early riser, or can bear to become one (this is where Andrea shudders at the thought!), mornings can be a fantastic time to harness the peace and quiet and get some outstanding work done. You may be amazed by the difference it makes to your day when you come into the office an hour or so earlier than usual.

Tackle the difficult tasks head on – Don’t submit to the temptation to put off those tasks you know will be more challenging, or those you quite simply do not fancy doing. Clearing these tricky tasks will free up the rest of your time and enable you to get back into your routine, concentrating as only an introvert can do, with nothing preying on your mind

Don’t skip your breaks – When you’re concentrating on a task and giving it your all, it’s easy to forget that you need to eat, grab a drink and just relax your mind from time to time. Make sure to take regular breaks, even if only for a few minutes to refresh your mind and keep you working at your best.

Put down your phone – One thing that most introverts can identify with is the feeling of overwhelm that can come from too much contact with others. It’s not that we don’t love other people’s company; it’s that we genuinely need time alone to recharge our batteries. Try putting your smartphone away and staying away from the internet at specified times for a few days and you may well be amazed at the difference it makes to your state of mind.
