Something for the weekend

It seems to me that football has taken over the world and it’s only the 18th of June.  There are other things to do than watch the World Cup on your weekend off.

If you live in London, or just fancy a day out in the city why not visit Covent Garden?  This weekend sees the 180th anniversary of the market building and there are lots of events to celebrate including an art installation, giant birthday cake, ice sculptures, and party games on the piazza, workshops, entertainment from Covent Garden’s street performers and Jazz FM and a projection from the BFI archive.

In Leicester square there is a chance to see excerpts from West End shows, as Leicester Square hosts outdoor performances from nearby theatres in West End Live Sat 11am-6pm; Sun noon-6pm

Exhibition Road hosts the annual free musical fiesta, part of European Music Day, features 120 performances on indoor and outdoor stages along Exhibition Road. Events take place on the street and at local venues including Kensington Gardens, the V&A, the Science Museum and the Royal Geographic Society.

In London Fields as Part of Men’s Health Week (June 14-20), The Great Drag Race is a new fundraising event that aims to increase public awareness of prostate cancer. Ten men with the disease have spent the past few months training to become drag queens in order to lead the 10.2 kilometer race (representing the 10,200 men lost to prostate cancer each year); it’s hoped the event will attract up to a 1,000 male participants (wearing wigs and frocks). You can register to take part online. The event also includes a barbecue, drinks tent and family entertainment.

In Tottenham a carnival procession, with floats from Tottenham Hotspur FC and others, starts from Eade Road, N4 at 11am; the festival features a Latin zone, a comedy tent, a fun fair and youth and pensioners’ zones.

In Edinburgh The 5th MoonWalk Edinburgh is held on the 19th June. This unique event sees 12,000 women and men Power Walking  through the streets of Edinburgh in brightly decorated bras all united in getting fit, raising funds, raising awareness for breast cancer and most of all having fun!

The best thing about these events is that they are all free.

It is certainly interesting for me to read this blog. Thanx for it. I like such themes and everything connected to them. I would like to read more on that site soon. BTW, rather good design your blog has, but how about changing it once in a few months? Jane Swingfield
