St David’s Day 2013 in London

Whether you are Welsh and hankering after a taste of your homeland or want to experience the culture of Wales without travelling (although we really think you should make the effort to visit!), there will be plenty for you to do in London for St David’s Day. The holiday falls on 1st March each year and here’s what this year has in store. Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus!

St David’s Day at Loose Cannon

One of the capital’s most popular St David’s Day celebrations is the evening event at Loose Cannon in the City.  Renowned Welsh comedian, Noel James, who has previously appeared at Glastonbury, the Edinburgh festival and on several TV programmes, will be entertaining guests alongside Welsh band, The Lucky 88’s. The band, who has supported the likes of Tom Jones, Suzy Quattro and the Manic Street Preachers, will play a selection of Welsh hits throughout the evening. The playlist will include tracks by the Stereophonics, Tom Jones and many other iconic tunes. Guests can also enjoy music from a Welsh male voice choir and plenty of food and drink. Tickets for this adults-only event are now available.

Oh! London! What’s Occurring?

Fans of Gavin and Stacey will immediately recognise the catchphrase which has been used as the name of this White Desert Productions event.  The free event will run in the evening of Friday 1st March, in the London Welsh Centre from 9pm. Comedy in the form of sketches and brand new writing is on the cards for those attending. Although entry is free of charge, donations are appreciated.

St David’s Concert 2013

On Saturday 2nd March, London Welsh Centre will be hosting their own St David’s Day celebrations in the guise of their annual concert.  Hywel Girls’ Choir and Hywel Boy Singers and the Gwalia Male Voice Choir will lead the audience in an evening of song, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets can be purchased in person at the venue but a special rate is currently available for those who book online. This rate is £20 per ticket, as opposed to £25 full price. Various discounts are available for Cartref, Curiad and Calon subscribers.

The Welsh Centre will also be home to various events and celebrations on St David’s Day itself; including Twmpath Welsh Folk Dancing.

St David’s Day Celebrations and Parade, Cardiff

If you do decide to make the trip to Wales for the celebration of the patron saint, it will be well worth your while. The most spectacular St David’s Day celebrations will take place in Cardiff, where visitors can take in the sights of a parade starting from City Hall at 12.30pm on 1st March. Famous faces such as Tom Jones, Gethin Jones, Shirley Bassey and Owain Glyndwr are expected to make an appearance.
