Summer Solstice 2013 – What’s Happening in London
We all know that 21st June is the longest day of the year, meaning that our days are going to start getting shorter from next week (despite the lack of a decent summer so far!). Various holidays, festivals and rituals have been put in place worldwide to celebrate the Summer Solstice and, regardless of your interest in the spiritual side of it, London has a number of events of its own to offer.
There are few better ways to celebrate any event than by losing yourself in some great music. While Music Day may not seem to have much to do with the Summer Solstice, it could be the perfect way for you to mark the occasion while indulging in a favourite pastime. On 21st June each year, various events are organised in over 500 cities around the world to mark Music Day, which has been celebrated since it originated in France in 1982. The events are all organised by independent groups but have some common principles; all events must be held on the day of the solstice and must offer free entry to the public, with a non-profit making objective. Details of the Music Day 2013 events in London and the rest of the UK can be found online.
All Saints Road Street Festival
If music isn’t really your thing, how about some shopping? Keep it Local, Keep it Independent and Keep it Individual are the principles behind the two-day shopping event, which offers Londoners an opportunity to sample a variety of food, drink, family fun and shopping. The festival will run on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd June, when a range of street food stalls, live music performances and interactive workshops are opened to the public.
English Heritage will once more be opening Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice. From 7pm on Thursday 20th June until noon on Friday 21st, the car park will be open to allow individuals and groups to conduct their own celebrations near the relic. This Managed Open Access has been put in place to enable interested parties to mark the occasion and, as such, the main rule is that all in attendance are tolerant of each other. English Heritage asks that visitors do not arrive before the specified time on the Thursday. Full details on the Managed Open Access period can be found on the English Heritage website.
