Time Management: Prioritising Needs Over Wants
One of the most common, and trickiest, dilemmas we all face in our busy lives is choosing between what we want to do and what we actually need to do. If you have a list of tasks to work through, how do you decide what is a Need and what is a Want?
The answer is incredibly simple: the Wants will still be there after the Needs are done. They will also be all the more enjoyable for knowing that you’ve ticked off all your Needs for the day.
Examples:
- You have to choose between filing those receipts and catching up on social media
- You have a deadline looming but you really fancy going out for a drink with friends
- You want to play some more PS3 or Xbox but you have an important meeting in the morning and really need a good night’s sleep
Each morning, spend a few minutes dividing your tasks into Wants and Needs. Use the Wants as a carrot, motivating you to get the Needs done.
Each evening, think about how great it feels to have fulfilled all your Needs and, in doing so, left some time free for your Wants!
