Top 10 Tips of Mistakes to Avoid When Traveling
Making travel plans takes time and patience. Sometimes this can get a bit hectic when plans all of a sudden change. The following tips offer advice on how to avoid travel mishaps, and to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.
#1 Avoid booking tickets too late.
Waiting until the last minute almost always results in high prices. To find the best deals, look far in advance for your flight destinations, whether it is cross continent or within Europe.
#2 Avoid booking an accommodation last minute or upon arrival.
It’s always best to book in advance with accommodation, especially during high season when hotels tend to book up quickly. In addition to the high prices and lack of options when you book late, another reason to book in advance is that some countries tend to be quite strict at immigration requiring the address of where you are planning on staying. Avoid the hassle and come prepared with all booking information
#3 Avoid packing too much
The extra weight is not worth it! More often than not, many people tend to over pack, pay the extra baggage fees, and end up not even using or wearing half of their items. Pack the necessities, and leave room for items you’d rather pick up during your travels.
#4 Avoid the forgetfulness to bring photocopies of your passport.
It happens to the best of us. I have had the unfortunate event of getting my passport stolen, but with the photocopies of my passport, I was issued a new one right away from the consulate. It decreases the time tremendously to have these photocopies when an emergency like this occurs.
#5 Avoid the forgetfulness of tagging or locking your luggage
Always tag your luggage with your name, address, and contact information before handing your luggage off through security. If it gets lost, the fastest way to get it back is when your contact details are clearly labeled on your luggage. Using locks that can be accessed by airline security (eg: TSA locks) also ensures that your luggage zippers will not be opened.
#6 Avoid the forgetfulness to validate your train ticket
This could be an expensive mistake if you forget to stop at the little yellow box to validate your ticket before boarding the train. You might face a huge fine, or even be kicked off the train.
#7 Avoid not knowing your confirmation codes
Save yourself time and unwanted confusion when airlines mistakenly lose your flight registration information. Printing or writing confirmation codes ahead of time will keep you one step ahead of them, which makes the process run a bit more smoothly.
#8 Avoid not knowing some of the local language
While you do not have to be fluent in the language of the country, locals always appreciate it when you attempt some of the general phrases. It’s all part of the culture, and your efforts will make it that much easier to get around, and you might even enjoy trying to speak in a different language.
#9 Avoid exchanging money before you travel
Exchanging money before you travel typically results in high exchange rates and unnecessary commission fees. Instead, visit an ATM upon your arrival and withdraw large amounts of cash at once so that you don’t have to pay a withdrawing fee multiple times. It’s convenient, and ends up being the least expensive option.
#10 Avoid seeing too much in a short time.
Although travellers typically want to see it all, realistically this will leave you feeling worn out and struggling to remember all the sights. Plan a few excursions and allow yourself the time to soak in the culture and enjoy what the journey brings you.
