Top 10 Tips: Suitcase Packing

  1. Don’t over pack. You are going to have to carry your suitcase so over packing will only make your life more difficult. Also most airlines have a luggage allowance and going over the limit will come with a hefty fine. Check with your airline before you fly what your allowance is.
  2. Have a few extra essentials. Although it is important not to over pack, make sure you have enough to get you by should you need to prolong your trip. Taking a few extra days worth of underwear is always a good idea!
  3. Be aware of what the hotel offer. Most hotels provide products such as hairdryers, an iron and ironing board and towels meaning you don’t need to pack them. However make sure you check with your specific hotel.
  4. Pack and fold neatly. Folding clothes neatly into a suitcase will give you more room and mean less ironing once you get to your destination. If folding isn’t one of your best skills, take a look here on the best way to do it.
  5. Bring a day bag. If you are planning on doing some sightseeing, make sure you pack a small bag that you can take with you. A water bottle, small purse and a small first aid kit all need to fit into the bag.
  6. Remember restrictions on hand luggage. Some airlines have a maximum size for hand luggage so make sure you check before you fly. Also liquid must not be over 100ml in size and must be placed in a clear plastic bag. Where possible it is best to put liquids into your main luggage. You can find more information from Directgov.
  7. Pack for all weather. Even if you are going to a sunny destination, be prepared for anything! Always pack some warm clothes such as a jumper and if possible a waterproof jacket. Jumpers can also be handy if it gets a bit chilly of an evening.
  8. Remember all your paperwork. It may seem obvious but remember your insurance documents, hotel reservation details, a copy of your passport and any other documents you may need. Keep them altogether in your hand luggage.
  9. Add luggage tags. Your airline may give you luggage tags to attach to your suitcase but make sure you have your own as backup. If anything happens to your suitcase, it is more likely to find its way back to you if it has a luggage tag. You can add some colour to your case with these Cath Kidston tags.
