Trying to Improve Your Time Management With No Success?

You know that better time management reduces stress levels and improves work-life balance, but actually improving skills can be quite tricky. If you’ve found yourself in a situation where you’ve downloaded the apps, read the books and tried everything you can think of with little or no improvement, there could be a simple solution.

These five reasons may explain why your time management tools are less than effective.

1.     The wrong tools

It really can be that simple. When you are choosing your time management tools, you need to pick something that will work with your lifestyle and work routine. If you work out of the office for large periods of time, a desktop planner is no good. Similarly, a mobile app is no good if only use your ‘phone for calls. Think about how and where you work and select a time management tool that fits in.

2.     You’re not sure how to use them

Mobile and desktop apps such as Evernote, Remember The Milk and Dropbox when giving time management help. These apps are all fantastic tools but, as with any other resource, they will only be effective if used correctly.  Invest a little time into reading the guide and learning how to get the most from your apps and other tools. If it doesn’t seem intuitive to you then try something else.

3.     The tools are too complicated

A product or service with all the bells and whistles doesn’t necessarily make it the best option for you.  The purpose of your time management tools is to save you time; keep them as simple and straightforward as possible.

4.     You’re trying to use too many different tools

Following on from keeping tools and systems simple, it’s also important to limit the number of different resources you use. You don’t need a hand written to-do list, one on a mobile phone app and one on your computer – stick to just one.

5.     You haven’t adopted it into your routine

Before any time management tool can be effective, it needs to become second nature. Revisit your daily routine and work out how and when your time management tool can be slotted in. Rather than adding an extra task to update or use your chosen system, make it part of everything you do.
