What to do in London this Christmas

BY cushion the impact

If you’re going to be in London over Christmas, there is plenty in store. From ice-skating and carol singing to festive lights and markets, you won’t be short of something to do. With just under a week left before the big day, it’s time to start planning and booking your festive activities. Here are just a few of our favourites.

Natural History Museum Ice Rink

The outdoor ice rink at the Natural History Museum will be open until 6th January, with a café bar serving food and drinks to skaters and non-skaters alike. The rink is open from 10am to 11pm on weekdays and from 9am to 11pm on weekends. Advance booking is essential and skaters are asked to arrive 45 minutes prior to their time slot. Bookings can be made online via Ticketmaster, by calling 0844 847 1576 or in person at the Natural History Museum.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

If you are looking for a family day out in London over the Christmas period, head to Hyde Park for a sure-fire winner. No matter what you want from your festive celebrations, you’re bound to find it in the Winter Wonderland, where attractions include Christmas markets, a giant observation wheel, Santa Land, Zippo’s Christmas Circus and an Ice Age 4 ice rink. Running until 6th January, each attraction is ticketed separately and all bookings can be made online. Advance booking is strongly advised.

Christmas Lights

There are a number of fantastic Christmas lights displays dotted around the city, with some of the most notable including the Rolling Stones 50th anniversary-themed Carnaby Street lights, the Marmite-sponsored Oxford Street lights and Christmas at Trafalgar Square.

A Very Dickensian Christmas

What could be more festive than a real-life A Christmas Carol experience? The newly-restored Dickens Museum is running events on 24th, 25th and 26th December, where visitors are invited to enjoy readings of Dickens’ Christmas Stories and screenings of A Christmas Carol. Be transported back in time by the Victorian Christmas décor, mulled wine, mince pies and other seasonal delights. The Dickens Museum is open from 11am until 6pm on each of the three days, with tickets priced at £18 per adult and £8 per child. Advance booking has sold out for all three days but a limited number of tickets will be made available over the coming days. These can be obtained by phoning 020 7405 2127 or emailing events@dickensmuseum.com.  Various Christmas Walks will also be organised by the museum.
