Where to Celebrate May Day 2013 in London

We all love a bank holiday and, at this time of year, there are plenty for us to enjoy. Next up on the holiday calendar is May Day; traditionally a celebration of spring time but more recently adopted as a day of campaigning for workers’ rights. Whether you choose to go down the political route or take the opportunity for some family fun, you’ll have plenty to choose from in London.

Canalway Cavalcade

The 30th annual Canalway Cavalcade will take place in its usual haunt of Little Venice from Saturday 4th May until Monday 6th.   Spectator admission is free of charge and, once you are there, there are numerous activities and attractions to take part in. A boat pageant, trade stalls, children’s entertainment and activities, bands, competitions and more will be waiting for visitors throughout the bank holiday weekend.

SPIN London Bicycle Festival

The world’s first urban bicycle festival is coming to The Old Truman Brewery in East London this May Day weekend. From 3rd-5th May, progressive cycling brands, indie manufacturers, fashion brands and other urban cycling experts will be displaying their wares in the venue, sharing their knowledge and expertise with visitors. Events taking place during the festival include live music from emerging DJs, Cycle-Art installations, talk and workshops. Everything the urban cyclist could possible want from a weekend! Advance tickets can be purchased for £7 online, or at the door on the day for £10.

Rooftop Film Club

The Rooftop Film Club will be showing favourite films at both the Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch and the Roof Gardens in Kensington throughout the month of May. Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom, Flight of The Navigator, Willow, Amelie and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind will be shown over the May Day weekend, with many more great films to follow. Tickets are now available, priced at £12 per person. Ticket price include a snack of a hot dog, burger or vegetarian option.

Famous Wolf Festival

The Old Queen’s Head in Islington will be hosting the Famous Wolf Festival on Sunday 5th and Monday 6th May. Roast dinners, Bloody Marys and music from DJs and live bands are on the menu for those who pay a visit to the pub over the bank holiday weekend. Performers include Citizen, Painting Elephants and Rae Kelly on Sunday, and Nathan Watson & The Freakonomics, Babilondon and Johnson and the Believers on Monday. Entry is free of charge all day on Monday and from 3pm until 9pm on Sunday. Entry after 9pm on Sunday will cost £5.
