Woolly Hat Week 2013

BY cushion the impact

When we think of fundraising and making a difference, we tend to think of major events such as marathons, races and other physical challenges. However, there are plenty of events throughout the year where we can do our bit to help others without dedicating a huge amount of time and training to the cause. One of these events is the Sailors’ Society’s Woolly Hat Week.

Woolly Hat Week 2013 starts on 3rd February and participants are asked to wear a woolly hat to work or about their daily business either for the day or for the entire week. Woolly hats have been chosen as they are an important part of sailors’ clothing; protecting them from the chilly environments at sea and in ports. The Sailors’ Society distributes over 20,000 woolly hats to seafarers each year, each of which has been knitted by a volunteer.

The Sailors’ Society is the largest and most comprehensive seafarer’s support charity in the world at present and has been in operation since 1818. For almost 200 years, the charity has provided a wealth of pastoral care, spiritual guidance, chaplaincy, financial help and other personal lifelines to many merchant sailors internationally. Although the Sailors’ Society is a Christian charity, the support they provide is multi-denominational and available to all who need it.

If you would like to take part in Woolly Hat Week 2013, the Sailors’ Society can be contacted at fundraising@sailors-society.org.
